The prognosis for patients with overactive bladder varies depending on the severity of the condition and the chosen treatment. Severe symptoms can significantly impact a patient's quality of life; medication can only alleviate symptoms and does not cure the disease.
Complications
Severe overactive bladder can significantly affect a patient's quality of life. In addition, patients may experience low mood, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, vaginitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.
Prevention
Obesity is a risk factor for overactive bladder; therefore, it is important to engage in regular physical exercise and maintain a healthy weight.
Avoid foods and drinks that may irritate the bladder, limit caffeine intake, and quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption.
Actively treat underlying conditions that may lead to overactive bladder, such as diabetes and prostatitis.
Learn pelvic floor muscle contraction exercises: When you feel the urge to urinate, try contracting your pelvic floor muscles for 8-10 seconds, then relax. Repeat 8-12 times, at least 3 times a day.
